The Law Firm Emery Mukendi Wafwana & Associés is pleased to announce that Mr. Upio Kakura Wapol joined our team in Kinshasa and Mr. Jonathan van Kempen joined our team in New York.

Mr. Upio Kakura Wapol is an attorney admitted to the Bar of Kinshasa/ Matete since 2008. He holds a law degree in economic and social law (1986) and a degree in Advanced Studies in law from the University of Kinshasa since 2007. He is currently a Senior Lecturer and Doctorandus at the same University.

Before joining the Law Firm Emery Mukendi Wafwana & Associés, Mr. Upio Kakura Wapol carried out numerous public duties including Minister of Human Rights, Minister of Relations with the DRC Parliament, National Deputy and member of boards of directors of various Public Companies or State-owned companies such as Gécamines, Office de Gestion du Fret Multimodal and Lignes Aériennes Congolaises. He was also Director of legal affairs of Régie des Voies Aériennes and served as legal expert to the Administration of the Congolese civil Aviation. He is currently General Director of the “Aviation & Development”, Center of Studies and Publications on Aviation Transport.

His areas of practice include aviation law, environment law, intellectual property law, investment law, land and real estate law, contract law, labor and social security law, OHADA law, legal evaluation of projects and litigation. He actively publishes in the areas of aviation law and he is amongst the very rare legal experts in Congolese aviation law.

With the addition of Mr. Upio Kakura Wapol to its team, the Law Firm Emery Mukendi Wafwana & Associés strengthens its expertise in aviation law at a time when the aviation industry is currently booming in the Democratic Republic of Congo (“DRC”). In addition to its expertise in Congolese and International aviation law, Mr. Upio Kakura Wapol is well-recognized in the industry and knows perfectly how the Congolese civil aviation industry works. He has become a key legal counsel for airlines, airport operators and other providers of aeronautical services seeking to expand their business or to invest in the DRC.

Mr. Jonathan van Kempen is admitted to the New York Bar since 2012 and to the Bar of Brussels since 2005. He holds a law degree from the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium (2002) and a master degree in German and International Economic Law from the Georg-August University of Göttingen in Germany (2005). He also holds a post-graduate in business management from the Hogeschool of Brussels in Belgium (2009) and a LL.M. in International Business and Trade Law from Fordham University School of Law, New York (2011). He speaks French, English, German and Dutch.

Before joining the Law Firm Emery Mukendi Wafwana & Associés, Mr. Jonathan van Kempen practiced for 5 years with a Brussels’ law firm in corporate and business law and for several months with a New York law firm in merger and acquisition transactions. At Fordham University, he was a teaching assistant for the course “Introduction to U.S. legal practices”. He is a member of the Public Relation committee of the Foundation for a Unified Business Law in Africa (F.U.B.L.A.), which promotes the OHADA Law in English speaking countries.

His areas of practice include corporate law, mining and hydrocarbon law, international mergers and acquisitions, OHADA law, international contracts and project finance in natural resources, energy and infrastructures in Africa, particularly in French speaking Africa.

With the addition of Jonathan van Kempen to its team, the Law Firm Emery Mukendi Wafwana & Associés strengthens its international capabilities and its expertise on international merger and acquisition transactions.
